"Cajun" humorist Wilson (who described himself as part-Cajun) was born in Roseland in Tangipahoa Parish, near the Mississippi border. Originally an itinerant safety engineer, he often encountered Cajuns during his travels, and developed a talent for telling Cajun jokes and stories. Wilson's first album of Cajun humor sold over a million copies; he went on to release more than two dozen additional albums. He wrote three comedic books: Justin Wilson's Cajun Humor (1974), Justin Wilson's Cajun Fables (1982), and More Cajun Humor (1984). Wilson also excelled as a chef, and hosted a popular cooking show on public television. Over the years he issued several cookbooks, including The Justin Wilson Cook Book (1965), The Justin Wilson #2 Cookbook: Cookin' Cajun (1979), The Justin Wilson Gourmet and Gourmand Cookbook (1984), Justin Wilson's Outdoor Cooking with Inside Help (1986), and Justin Wilson Looking Back: A Cajun Cookbook (1997). Despite his national popularity, Wilson angered some South Louisianians with his stereotypical portrayal of a poorly educated Cajun who spoke substandard English.- Barry Seal was born on 16 July 1939 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA. American politician and songwriter who appeared in a number of films. Davis was born in the now-nonexistent town of Beech Springs, Louisiana, the son of sharecroppers. He and his ten siblings lived in dire poverty, but Davis paid his way through Louisiana College and Louisiana State University as a street musician. After graduate school, he taught at Dodd College for Women, supporting himself with a singing job on a local radio station. He got a chance to record one of his songs when a record talent scout heard him on a broadcast, and in 1934 his song "Nobody's Darling But Mine" was a hit. A 1931 song, "You Are My Sunshine," became a 1939 hit, a standard eventually recorded by a score of singing stars from Bing Crosby to Aretha Franklin. No longer poor, but unable to live off his songs, Davis entered politics and was elected police chief of Shreveport. He continued to record songs and occasionally acted in movies, especially B-Westerns, until in 1943 he decided to run for governor of Louisiana. Although Davis's opponent tried to use his singing background against him, it actually was a great factor in Davis's election to the post. Even after he was elected governor, he continued to record songs and played himself in a movie of his life, Louisiana (1947). During the 1950s, he made records and concert appearances, then ran again for governor again in the 1960s. He was elected again and reluctantly presided over Louisiana's difficult transition into greater racial equality. After this second term, Davis spent the rest of his career singing, recording over fifty albums. He died at 101, enormously popular in his home state and likely to be remembered less as a politician or actor than as the composer of "You Are My Sunshine," one of the most familiar American songs of all time.- Music Department

Alabama-born Percy Sledge had a somewhat unusual introduction to the music business. Working as an orderly in a local hospital, he was touring with a local band called the Esquires Combo on weekends and working at the hospital during the week. A former patient at the hospital who knew both Sledge and local record producer Quin Ivy introduced them to each other. Ivy was impressed with Sledge's emotional style of singing and signed him to a recording contract. Sledge hit it big with his first record, the classic "When a Man Loves a Woman", released by Atlantic Records, which went on to become a worldwide hit (and, incidentally, the first Atlantic record to go gold). Although Sledge never had another hit as big as "When a Man Loves a Woman," he did manage to place several follow-up records on the charts. He still tours today, and has an especially large following in Europe.- Randall was born in New Orleans in 1914 and lived there until moving to Mandeville, Louisiana in 1987. James Isaac Moore, known as Slim Harpo, born in Lobdell, Louisiana, in 1924, was an American blues musician, singer/songwriter, a leading exponent of the swamp blues style, that made the national charts and international recognition. In the mid-50's he began performing in Baton Rouge bars using the name "Harmonica Slim", accompanied by his brother-in-law Lightnin' Slim. In 1957 he was spotted by record producer Jay Miller and made his first recording, the single "I'm a King Bee" / "I Got Love if You Want It" on Excello Records. To differentiate himself from another performer called Harmonica Slim, he took his wife's suggestion and adopted the name Slim Harpo. In 1961 he made the charts with "Rainin' in My Heart" , his sixth single record, that generated his first album "Slim Harpo sings..." including 12 tracks. His biggest commercial success came in 1966, when "Baby Scratch My Back" reached number one on the R&B chart and number 16 on the broader charts. Produced by Jay Miller and written by Slim Harpo himself, using Jas. Moore on the label. Many of his songs were co-written with his wife, Lovelle Moore, although she never received credit. The laconic, loping beat with tremolo laden guitar, wood block maracas, and snapping snare drum sound of "Baby Scratch My Back" was a great part of the success. Along with Slim Harpo's laid-back blues rap monologue it soon became a corner stone in blues, rhythm'n blues and rock'n roll music. Slim Harpo's songs and style was first copied by British bands like The Rolling Stones and Kinks. Later many other acts and performers followed.
